Once called “the finest island for its size in the world” by Marco Polo, Sri Lanka will provide participants many reasons for an extended stay beyond the race weekend with their seductive beaches, magnificent landscapes featuring lazy lagoons, fertile wetlands, ecologically-wondrous types of forest, imposing mountains, bounteous rivers and waterfalls, along with an abundance of wildlife. The New York Times named Sri Lanka the #1 place in the world to visit in 2010.

On February 17, 2013, Colombo will host Sri Lanka’s only Ironman 70.3 and 5150 Series race, offering qualifying slots for the Ironman World Championship 70.3 and 5150 Series Championship. The event will become part of the Ironman 70.3 Series that includes over 40 races worldwide and the 15-race 5150 Triathlon Series. RACE IS LIMITED TO THE FIRST 750 PARTICIPANTS.

About The Course
The events will be staged from the beautiful Galle Face Green in the backdrop of the Indian Ocean and downtown Colombo. The Ironman 70.3 event will feature a 1.9 kilometer swim, followed by a three lap 90 kilometer bike and finishing with a two lap 21 kilometer run. The 5150 Triathlon will feature a 1.5 kilometer swim, followed by a two lap 40 kilometer bike and finishing with a 10 kilometer run. Both the bike and run courses feature flat and fast courses.

Official Course Nutrition
Hammer Nutrition will be providing all the on course fuel for Ironman 70.3 Sri Lanka and Sri Lanka 5150. Look for ice cold HEED fluid replacement drink on the bike (in bottles @ 10k & 20k)) and on the run (in cups every 2k). Hammer Gel will also be available on the bike and run along with Endurolyteselectrolyte replacement capsules to keep you from cramping up. Also available at these aid stations will be water (in bottles and cups), ice and assorted fruit.

Swim – 1.9/1.5km - Cut off is 8:30 am.

Race Rules
APPLYING TO ALL SEGMENTS OF THE RACE
1. Medical personnel have the ULTIMATE and FINAL authority to remove an athlete from the race if the athlete is judged to be physically incapable of continuing the race without risk of serious injury to themselves or others. Medical transport of any athlete will result in disqualification.
2. If an athlete withdraws from the race at any time, it is their responsibility to report to the Race Office and turn in their race number and timing band as it is essential that race officials know where each athlete is on the course at all times.
3. Communication or entertainment devices of any type are strictly prohibited during competition and use of such devices will result in disqualification.
4. An athlete must not accept any form of outside assistance (food, drink, clothing, equipment) from non-authorized race personnel i.e. spectators, family, friends, coaches, nor leave items at spots on the course for collection whilst competing. An athlete reported for such activity will be disqualified.
5. The race organizers reserve the right to make rule changes at any time provided all athletes are notified in writing and/or at the pre-race mandatory meetings.
6. Discarding equipment such as clothing, gel wrappers, equipment, etc anywhere on the course except at Aid Stations is not permitted.

TRANSITION
1. Each athlete must pack all their swim gear and bike gear in their gear bag at their designated transition spot so as not to impede the safe movement of other athletes.
2. No public nudity is allowed and any breach will result in disqualification.
3. Each athlete must have their bike helmet securely fastened on their head prior to un-racking their bike to commence the bike leg and until they have racked their bike prior to commencing the run leg.
4. Bikes must not be ridden in transition at any time.

SWIM
1. Each athlete must wear the swim cap provided by the race organization.
2. No fins, aqua socks, gloves, paddles, snorkels or flotation devices of any type are allowed.
3. If the water temperature is up to and including 24.5°C/76.1°F wetsuits that are 5mm or less in thickness may be worn. The De Soto Water Rover wetsuit is banned.
4. If the water temperature is more than 24.5°C/76.1°F wetsuits are banned and swimwear must be only made from nylon or lycra and NOT have any rubberised material such as polyurethane or neoprene. Swimwear may not cover the neck, extend past the shoulder, nor extend past the knees. Swim suits and/or trisuits may contain a zipper.

BIKE
1. No drafting of another athlete or vehicle is allowed.
2. The draft distance BETWEEN bikes is 7-metres (4 bike lengths) measured from the rear edge of the back wheel of
the leading bike to the leading edge of the front wheel of the bike behind.
3. Athletes must only pass another athlete on the right hand side.
4. Athletes must ride single file on the far left side of the road except when passing another athlete.
5. Unless making a pass side-by-side riding is not allowed as it is blocking.
6. Unless making a pass keep four (4) bike lengths BETWEEN bikes.
7. When making a pass once the rear athlete is within four (4) bike lengths of the forward athlete the rear athlete is
allowed a maximum of 20-seconds to pass the forward athlete and MUST COMPLETE the pass. At all times the
rear athlete must be seen to be gaining on the forward athlete.
8. An athlete who fails to complete a pass within 20-seconds is drafting.
9. An athlete who has been passed must drop back four (4) bike lengths before attempting to re-pass the athlete.
10. A bike helmet, shoes and a top that covers the upper torso must be worn.
11. Each athlete will receive in their registration kit a bike race number bib, a bike number plate and a helmet number
sticker. The bike race bib number must be displayed on the back of the athlete’s bike top or race belt; the bike
number plate must be displayed on the right hand side of the bike and the helmet number sticker must be displayed
on the front of the helmet. All three numbers must be visible at all times to technical officials and race staff.
12. Athletes must follow the directions and instructions of all race officials and public authorities.

RUN
1. No form of locomotion other than running, walking or crawling is permitted.
2. Shoes and a top that covers the upper torso must be worn.
3. The run race bib number received in the athlete’s registration kit must be displayed on the front of the athlete’s run top or race belt and be visible at all times to technical officials and race staff.
4. Pacing by non-contestant runners is outside assistance and will result in disqualification. A non-contestant runner includes athletes who have withdrawn from the race, have been disqualified or have finished the race.

TECHNICAL OFFICIALS
The race organizers have appointed a Head Referee and a team of Technical Officials to administer ALL race rules across the entire race and all athletes are expected to be familiar with the rules.

RULE INFRINGEMENTS
Technical Officials will be proactive in ensuring that athletes compete within the race rules and may issue a warning before issuing an infringement however this is not a requirement. If issuing a Warning the Technical Official will gain the attention of the athlete and inform them what to do to avoid receiving an infringement - NO Red Card or Yellow Card will be shown. If issuing an Infringement the Technical Official will gain the attention of the athlete, show either a RED CARD (drafting infringement) or a YELLOW CARD (all other infringements) and explain the action required by the athlete.
If the infringement is for Drafting the athlete MUST report to the Penalty Tent to serve a five (5) minute time penalty.
If the infringement is for Blocking, Illegal Position, Illegal Pass or Littering the athlete MUST report to the Penalty Tent to perform a Stop/Start Penalty.
Three (3) or more infringements across the entire course will result in automatic disqualification with no right of appeal.

PENALTY TENT
If an athlete is reported for an infringement during the Swim they will be required to serve a Stop/Start Penalty in a designated area prior to entering T1.
On the Bike course the Penalty Tent will be sign posted on the approach and will be located close to the East Coast Beach turnaround. Each athlete reporting to the Penalty Tent should follow the directions of the volunteer/s and MUST print and sign their name in the Register as evidence of having reported to the Penalty Tent.
An athlete who receives an infringement will be disqualified if they:
* Fail to report at the Penalty Tent;
* Fail to report to the Penalty Tent on the lap they received the infringement;
* Fail to serve the correct number of infringements received; or
* Serve the incorrect penalty.
If an athlete receives an infringement on the Run course they will be required to serve an on course Stop/Start Penalty with the Technical Official.
